Happy 1st Birthday, Jackie!

It's hard to believe that it's already been a year.

I'm not sure that time flew by in the past year, since there were many nights with less sleep and many days chasing the little man around, but when you stop and mark the occasion, it's hard to believe it's been a full year.

Jack's been up to a lot, and I've been remiss in writing some of his recent highlights:

Walking! Jack is now mobile and gets around to anywhere we want to go. Thankfully, we've been babyproofing the house, but Jack still finds those nooks and crannies. He's really good at going up stairs. Not so good at figuring out how to go down them.

Dog bowls. If he knows dog bowls are on the floor, he will go as fast as he can to get to them or play in the water bowl.

Food. Jack has a hearty appetite. He loves to eat most anything, especially fruit like mangos, bananas and some peaches. Eats a lot of dried vegetables, too. Also a big fan of sushi rice and tofu, which proves that he is indeed at least 25% Japanese. Loves to be able to drink water and hold his own cup.

Laughter. Jack's laugh is infectious. He loves to laugh this big hearty laugh, and he does it all the time, especially when Mommy and Daddy make funny faces, throw a ball in the air or make the dogs jump. He's also good at fake laughter. Daddy will hold him up in the front window to let him bang on the window while Daddy barks like Truman. When Daddy barks, Jack makes a fake laugh since it's only sorta funny. Daddy better get used to that polite laughter.

Family. Jack loves his family. All his grandparents, great-grandparents, cousins and friends. He loves to go to his great grandma's house and make her laugh and smile. He loves going to Nana's house and also seeing Obaasan.

Music. Still a big deal for Jack, although his favorite instrument right now is the guitar. Jack's personal style is pulling on the strings, although he's working on strumming them.

Hamming it up for the camera. Jack's used to getting his picture taken every day. As a result, when he sees the camera, he smiles big.

Bath time. Jack loves the water, and splashing it all over everything. The new thing is to take a bubble bath with Daddy in the big bath tub. Jack likes to eat the ubbles and get a bubble beard.

Swings. The swings at the park are Jack's favorite.

Affection. Jack loves to give kisses. Big wet, open-mouth kisses. Sometimes those turn into bites. Jack also likes to give hugs to the dogs, putting his head on them, and saying "Awww."

Fatherhood gets more fun with every passing day. Jack's getting bigger (I caught myself thinking about registering him for preschool -- something about a 2 year wait?) very fast. I'm told that now that he's mobile and working on talking that he'll grow up even faster. I'm still trying to find that job with next to no hours that would let me provide for him and still spend more time.

Not to say that hanging out with Jack isn't hard work. Anytime I'm alone with him for three consecutive hours, I find myself needing a nap afterward. Man, I'm old.

There are a lot of gentle moments that I love. Whether it's getting him from his crib when he wakes up, and seeing him smile when I walk in the door. Or seeing that same smile when i come home from work. Or rocking him as he drinks his bottle before sleeping. Listening to him say "awww" when he hugs the dogs. Or hearing him laugh when I toss him in the air or tickle him. Now, being able to call his name, and have him walk to me. It's all wonderful. I can't wait for the next day to see what will happen...
